Ordering Wine - Shipping Questions

While everyone wants the best wine shipped straight to their doors, there are an overwhelming number of state laws and regulations that affect how and where wine can be shipped. Before you join the Hunt Club or place an order for a memorable Petite Syrah or Super Tuscan wine, you should consult your state's Alcohol and Beverage Commission to understand the restrictions you may face.
Individuals are never allowed to ship alcohol in the United States; however, wineries can apply for business and shipping permits in order to send a customer's favorite Petite Sirah, a seasonal Merlot or a fresh Chardonnay. While some states have fairly lax laws regarding the ability to send and receive alcohol, others consider any violation of code a felony.
For example, Indiana limits shipments from wineries in California to no more than 3,000 bottles per year while other states such as South Carolina place a restriction on the number of bottles per person per month. In some states, such as Montana, individuals must apply for a connoisseur's license in order to receive any shipment of wine. Because of these tough laws, wineries should obtain a copy of the consumer's license before shipping any order to a recipient in Montana. While some of these laws seem very stringent, you can always find a way to receive your favorite bottles.
